Normandy is a surprising region, as much for its history as for its landscapes. Famous for the richness of its natural heritage, for its gastronomy, for its changing lights, it is above all famous for the ambitious character of its ancestors the Vikings! To understand the boldness of the Normans, we must go back to the Middle Ages, when Guillaume the Conqueror, worthy heir of the Vikings, seized the throne of England by winning the Battle of Hastings. The Bayeux tapestry, a textile work of art made with a needle on a linen fabric, and registered in the international register Memory of the World, testifies this achievement.
Many centuries later, the Normandy beaches would be the scene of another battle, even more brave and bold: the Battle of Normandy. On June 6, 1944 and during the long summer that followed, men from all over the world came to fight in Normandy to restore Freedom.
Other famous characters have seized the beauty of the Norman curves, namely the painters: Normandy was the cradle of the Impressionist movement. Among the most famous, Claude Monnet, Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Édouard Manet, put down their easels in the Norman countryside to draw, with precision, all the nuances composing abundant landscapes.
Lastly, how can we not mention its gastronomy and the flavors that make Normandy vibrant? If the region is known for its cheeses (Camembert, Pont-l’Évêque, Livarot…), its orchards overflowing with apples, and the quality of its milk products, it also distinguishes itself as the first French region of scallop fishing! You can also enjoy Saint Vaast oysters, Isigny caramel and Teurgoule…
